21-01-2017: ‘Leander’, Carlisle and a Grand Day Out

A very early start this morning with a four a.m. rise for a trip to Carlisle to see the first Winter Cumbrian

LMS Jubilee class 4-6-0, 45690 ‘Leander’ stands at Carlisle on 21st January 2017 with the 1Z45 Manchester Victoria-Carlisle ‘Cumbrian Mountain Express’ railtour.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

I arrived at Stirling around 04:35hrs in time to see the 1S25 London Euston-Inverness Caledonian Sleeper, hauled by GBRf class 66, 66743 (in Royal Scotsman livery) & class 73, 73971. The coaching consist was as follows: 9800, 6703, 10650, 10562, 10675, 10613, 10553 & 10551. This was closely followed by DRS class 66, 66421 on the 4H47 Mossend Yard-Inverness’Tesco’ intermodal.

I then travelled from Stirling to Glasgow Queen Street and then from Glasgow Central to Carlisle, arriving at Carlisle around 08:30hrs.
The early part of the day was quiet as far as freight was concerned, but the arrival of ‘Leander’ on the railtour, soon lifted interest. As well as the tour, there were a couple of ECS movements associated with turning the steam locomotive, so that it would be facing the correct way for the return journey. This was done on the triangle of lines to the south of Carlisle station. There was also an ‘insurance’ diesel locomotive on the end of the formation in the form of WCRC class 37, 37706. The coaching consist, which included three Pullman dining cars was: M17025, 3093 ‘Florence’, 99121 ‘Julia’,99712, 99350 ‘Car 350 Tanzanite’, 99351 ‘Car 351 Sapphire’, 99348 ‘Car 348 Topaz’, 99128 ‘Pamela’, 99318, 4905 & 99304.

In the latter part of the afternoon and early evening, there were a few movements, including three intermodals and a triple light locomotive movement. (See the loco hauled list below for details).

In the evening, I travelled back to Stirling, arriving back just afte 21:00hrs, but I remained at the station until after midnight as there were a couple of freights and engineers trains. For the latter part, I retired to the warmth of my car to watch the interesting moves associated with the last multiple units of the night stabling and the ECS movements involved with that.
By the time I got home and into bed, it was after 01:00hrs, meaning I’d had a twenty-one hour day…and not a bad one at that.
