04-02-2017: Tea, Scones and a Day at Inverness…

If you’d told me I would be out photographing train at four o’ clock in the morning and still

Scotrail class 158, 158709 awaits it’s next turn of duty at Inverness on 4th February 2017.

be out a one o’ clock the NEXT morning in February, I would’ve laughed, however, that’s just what happened today.
I had planned to travel up to Inverness to spend the day there, knocking off some of my remaining Scottish units for this year, but got up at 04:00hrs in order to go to Stirling station to see the 1S25 London Euston-Inverness ‘Caledonian Sleeper’, then do a bit of spotting from the warmth and comfort of my car until my train for Inverness was due at 07:36.
Arriving at Stirling, the first thing I discovered was that I could’ve had an extra bit of time in my bed as the sleeper was around twenty minutes late. When it did arrive, it was not hauled by a GBRf class 66/73 combination, but instead by a DBS class 67, 67013 with a consist of: 9802, 6708, 10723, 10527, 10542, 10580 & 10502. It was followed closely by the 4H47 Mossend Yard-Inverness ‘Tesco’ intermodal, hauled by DRS class 66, 66422; which was running early until it was delayed in the Larbert area by the late running sleeper.
I spent a bit of time watching the early morning ECS and passenger workings at Stirling before heading for my train to Inverness, on this occasion, haauled by Scotrail class 170, 170407, currently adorned with BTP advertising vinyls.
The journey up to Inverness was uneventful and the train was quiet. Just the way I like it. A nice cup of tea from the trolley, a wee sleep and nobodys earphone squeaking in the background.
On arrival at Inverness there was a flurry of activity before I’d even got off the train in the form of DBS class 66, 66106 with the 6H66 Lairg to Mossend Yard oil empties, awaiting the road south as well as 66422 and 67013, both shunting the trains seen earlier at Stirling. Also present were class 08 shunter 08526 and stabled DRS class 37, 37606.
Inverness isn’t the easiest pace to trake photos, the freight activity all takes place at the Aberdeen end of the layout around the Millburn Jn area and it’s a good ten minute walk from there to Millburn. There is a gap in the fence, close to a supermarket thought, and it was here that I found a fellow Enthusiast, (who identified the class 37). We spoke for a bit then I headed to Millburn, however there is an unusually large wall that prevents much from being seen without steps. I fell off this wall in the mid-1980’s, trying to get a photo of the old Welsh’s Bridge signal box. (I got the photo and a rather large bump on the head as well)!!
Most of the rest of the day was either spent spotting, taking photos or walking around the greater station area, looking for other places to take photos from. One of the best being Debenhams cafe’ in the Eastgate Centre, from where spotting and photography can be carried out accompanied by a nice cup of tea and a buttered scone, provided the correct window is chosen!! 🙂
On the way home, the train was empty for most of the way, though I was a couple of minutes late back at Stirling. I headed back to the car, cranked up the heater and watched the unit disposals and ECS workings until the end of service, just after 01:00hrs.
To quote a Gulf war correspondent, “I counted them all out, and I counted them all back in again”.
